Last week we introduced Orchestrate, an AI workflow composer that allows insurers to build and ship powerful agentic AI workflows in minutes using natural language. Insurers’ IT teams can use Orchestrate to easily bring new AI ideas to life, without compromising the security of their proprietary data.
You can read more about how and why we built Orchestrate in our launch announcement. In this blog, we’ll take a deeper dive into how Orchestrate works to enable insurers to create agentic AI workflows that can accomplish a huge variety of tasks.
Before we get into how Orchestrate specifically works, let’s take a moment to go over what agentic AI can do, and why it matters.
An agentic AI system is one that can act autonomously, taking action and reasoning to solutions without direct human oversight. Agentic AI systems can handle complex, multi-step assignments, including those that involve multiple systems.
One reason agentic AI is so powerful is that, rather than being told exactly what actions to take and how to take them, an agentic AI system can simply be given an objective. It will then reason its way to a solution, coming up with the necessary steps along the way.
To do this, most agentic AI systems use a framework with three primary steps: perceiving the situation, by gathering a processing a large amount of data from a variety of sources; reasoning to a solution, by analyzing the gathered data to understand the problem and generating a plan to overcome it; and acting on its plan using connections to other systems like APIs.
Agentic AI has the potential to significantly boost productivity in nearly all verticals, including insurance. For underwriters, agentic AI workflows can automate repetitive tasks that don’t really require their expertise, freeing up time for the more important work that does require it.
This is one of the major benefits of Orchestrate: it allows insurers’ IT departments to quickly and easily deploy agentic AI workflows for underwriting, so that the organization can start reaping the benefits.
Orchestrate is an AI workflow composer, which means it’s a tool that allows users to generate agentic AI workflows with little-to-no coding. Let’s go through an example to illustrate how it works.
Say that an underwriting team wants to automate a common manual task: emailing a broker for more information on an incomplete submission. Rather than going through a long build process or adding yet another point solution, the IT team can create an agentic workflow with Orchestrate.
To get started, the user can open the tool and type a prompt into the field for what they want to accomplish. Orchestrate uses natural language prompting, so this part is as easy as telling the system what you’re trying to do. For our example case, that might mean entering something like “build me a workflow that will detect incomplete submissions, and send a followup email requesting more information to the broker who submitted it.”
Orchestrate will then reason through what needs to happen in order to accomplish that goal, and create a workflow made up of sub-agents, which are individual AI agents for specific functions. A different sub-agent performs each task in the workflow to arrive at the objective. In this case, Orchestrate might create a workflow that looks something like this:
Once the workflow is generated, the IT team can review each step, and what actions the AI plans to take. Proposed workflow actions might include things like pulling information from existing systems, creating prompts for generative AI to create draft copy, or even generating code to accomplish a certain function. For each step, the IT team can examine the intended action and make any changes to either the action or its output (for example, adjusting generated code).
When the insurer’s IT team is happy with the generated workflow, they can push it live with the press of a button. The subagents will then get to work on their appointed tasks. Later, if the insurer wants to iterate on the workflow, it’s as simple as just editing the flow in Orchestrate. And with the entire process delivered within Federato’s secure environment, IT teams can focus on delivering AI functionality to their users without risking a data security or compliance breach.
Agentic AI holds enormous potential to accelerate underwriting. With Orchestrate, it’s never been easier for insurers to get started. What are you waiting for?
